The 10 minutes that changed my life Hello, you need to hear this story. Its called the 10 minutes that changed my life. Six months ago I weigh 185 pounds and at 5 foot 6 that put me one pound over the body mass index into obesity. Now I didn’t think I looked obese but numbers don’t lie. 6 months ago I smoke cigarettes and had a big old buhda belly and I drink a lot of beer. Around that time 6 months ago, I stopped smoking with the help of Trish at the stop smoking clinic in Tavernier. Phone number 305 852 9551 I immediately felt better with improved energy and endurance. And I put on 10 pounds which is normal and should be expected. And just so you know statistics show an increase in weight between 8 to 10 pounds after you stop smoking. And 90% of those people lose that weight and return to their pre smoking weight after 1 year ok. Now I was already a member at Islamorada Fitness and I was working out about 1 to 4 times a month. I couldn’t figure out why I was so unmotivated. For 30 years of my life I worked out four to six times a week I used to eat healthy and I had a body that looked good. Things started to change when one night at my church group we were discussing how hard it is to ask for help. We challenged each other to go out and ask for help from that one person we’ve been wanting to ask but were too scared to do it. I picked Andrea. I’ve been putting off asking Andrea for some advice regarding my diet. I knew if I asked I would have to make some difficult decisions regarding what I eat. The next day I asked Andrea for help and in 10 minutes… She gave me suggestions that have literally changed my life! In the few months that I have gotten to know her I could tell she observed a very healthy diet regime but I was hardly prepared for what she told me, let’s just say she didn’t pull any punches. I realized I needed to change my diet about 180 degrees. Now at the time it wasn’t too bad I didn’t eat a lot of fast food and I… Well I guess that was about all that was good lol. Andrea advised me that I should stop eating all white products things like white bread, white rice and stop eating fried foods. And he said I should reduce my alcohol consumption. Well I changed overnight I threw out all the bread and rice and went to the store and stocked up on bread brown rice and organic chicken fruits vegetables and nuts. In 3 days I was feeling a lot better, sleeping better, digesting better, I continue to work out 3 to 4 times a week but now I had more energy I also had a support group in Andrea, Margaret and Jay. Each time I worked out they would ask how I was doing and without their encouragement I would not have been able to do it. I didn’t realize how much Alcohol I was drinking until I started writing it down. It was when I did my food diary. It turns out that 50% of my calories were from alcohol! Wow! Working with Andrea we came up with a plan first I switched from Corona to Coors Light I found that on any given night after I drink three or four beers my judgment would become impaired and I would drink more and more. I was scared to stop drinking I didn’t know if I could rather than give up I decided to make a plan I made an agreement with myself. I allowed myself to drink as long as I continued to cut down I started at 10 beers per day and planned to drink one less per day. The plan was to get to one beer per day and stay at that. But I couldn’t do it I got stuck at 3 beers and couldn’t budge. Then again Andrea came up with the idea of supplementing with nonalcoholic beer. The near beer idea worked in a week I stop drinking as I write this I haven’t had a drink of alcohol in 30 days. It turns out that non-alcoholic beers are much better tasting than they were 10 years ago when I last tried them there is a wide variety to choose from Becks and Coors and Heineken all have nonalcoholic versions of their beer. I prefer O’Doul’s because it is most like Bud Light my old beer of choice. I diet 6 days a week and on the seventh day I take a cheat day this is a diet technique that Andrea uses. Of course she just takes a cheat meal. On my first cheat days I started off with a full day of mass consumption. Bacon and eggs breakfast margaritas and enchiladas for lunch beer and hamburgers for dinner and I still lost 9 pounds in my first 30 days. After 3 weeks or so I didn’t like how my body felt during and after my cheat day. I then she got down to a cheat meal at a restaurant and now I don’t even do that. Lately my cheat meals are a nice barbecue steak and a baked potato that I cook at home with real with real butter yeah! I can’t believe how healthy I feel! I bounce when I walk, my digestion is perfect. I don’t sweat all the time like I used to, I’m lifting incredible amounts of weight at the gym. I can do 90 minutes of low impact cardio and I feel great when I’m done. I can work all day in the Sun and complain less than my coworkers that are 20 years younger than me. I found that when I’m hungry instead of stopping for a burger and fries I wait till I get home and I can have a can of soup. My new diet isn’t really a diet anymore it’s just the way I eat. Instead of a candy bar I have hard candy instead of frying foods I grill it or broil it. I look forward to my workouts I’m amused by how I cannot work my younger coworkers. Of course I’m slimmer and stronger I feel better about how I look I’ve already started to get compliments and more attention from women. I’m in my 6th week and have lost 12lbs. Islamorada Fitness has been a major part of recovery for me. I have have many severe injuries in my life, 3 of which have been major spinal injuries. This last year I had broken my back and pelvis, which the doctors said I would never fully recover from the surgery and I would have to limited physical strain the rest of my life.
I did not want that to stop me, so I went to Islamorada Fitnessto work on my personal fitness to regain physical strenght. After only 3 months of training I was able to participate in a paddle board crossing from Key Largo to Flamingo which was roughly 33 miles. I would have never imagined 6 months after my surgery I could do such a thing. Now I am 6 months into training and I am in better shape than I have been in for a long time. I attribute my progress to the help I received from Islamorda Fitness.
